Protecting your home

For any home owner safe guarding the contents of a house is essential as the sentimental items kept in a house is often what makes it a home. Pretty much all home owners these days have some sort of home and contents insurance which covers the cost of any items in a home should any burglary or other disaster occur.

However it is one thing to be prepared should the worst happen but all home owners should also be looking to prevent the worst from happening. There are a number of simple measures that every home owner can take to protect their home and reduce the chances of it being burgled. Most burglars are opportunists who will unplanned break in to a home that gives them any sign that people are away and it can be entered easily.

The best way to ensure your house does not become an opportunity is to look at from the perspective of a burglar. Is there anything that suggests that people are out or away? Milk bottles piled up outside or complete darkness in the house, is there anything that suggests that entering the house will be easy? An open door, ladder in the garden or open window may attract the attention of a thief.

By ensuring all doors and windows are securely locked and there is no easy access to your home burglars are likely to be deterred. Another great deterrent for burglars is a security alarm. By having a security system installed into your home not only will burglars be caught if entering the property they will be put off by its sheer presence on the side of the property. Although buildings and contents insurance is essential, securing a property is just as important. House insurance combined with the right security measures is a much more effective method of safe guarding a home than insurance alone.
